2000s
The 2000s fashion decade is the one described as being 'mash-up', where trend saw the fusion of previous styles, global and ethnic clothing (boho). Those years adopted a dressy casual style. Globalisation influenced the decade's clothing trends with the incorporation of Middle Eastern and Asian dress into mainstream European, American and Australian fashion.
The fashion trends that dominated between 2000 and 2009 is mainly 'boho-chic'. It is a combination of nontraditional eclectic styles influenced by gypsies and hippies. This style is a balance between messy and feminine look, while establishing a sense of uniqueness and individuality.
Boho-chic was first donned by actress Sienna Miller and model Kate Moss at the Glastonbury Festival in the UK in 2004. At the same time, the American version of the modern bohemian was popularised by the Olson Twins (Mary Kate and Ashley), and became fashionable in areas of New York City, specifically Greenwich Village and Soho. The trend caught on Boho-chic influenced the resurgence of vintage shops, especially in New York City, as many celebrities have been seen scouring the racks for individualised jewels.
